Defending champions Manipur retained their title in the 12th Senior National Women's football tournament defeating West Bengal 6-5 in a thrilling final. For the Manipuri girls, the victory came in 'sudden death' in the final played at Tatiya Tope Nagar stadium after the match remained goalless after regular and extra time. In the penalty shoot out, the score was 2-2 after the tie-breaker before Manipur emerged victorious 4-3 in the sudden death to bag the title. "We were lucky in the tie breaker. We will try and improve on our performance in the future," said Bem Bem Devi, Captain, Manipur. "We won this trophy because of hard work and a good performance," added SK Singh, Coach, Manipur. Meanwhile, even as there was disappointment in the Bengal camp for losing to Manipur once again, footballers were hopeful that things were shaping up in the right direction. "We had a lot of junior players. We will work on our coordination and understanding so that we play better in the future," said Sujata, Captain, Bengal. Promoting women's football The All India Football Federation President Priyaranjan Das Munshi, who was present on the occasion, has announced another national level tournament for women from next year.
