A solitary goal from former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Lorik Cana ended a three-year jinx for Marseille in the French Ligue 1 on Sunday as Jean Fernandez's side beat Paris St. Germain 1-0 at the Velodrome for the first time since 2002. The match was marked by the return of goalkeeper Fabien Bathez, back from suspension after six months following an unsavoury spitting incident with a referee. It was not long until Bathez was making his mark, seemingly taking out PSG's Bonaventure Kalou when the Ivorian striker was bearing down on goal after just 10 minutes. The referee took no action, nor at the other end Marseille's Franck Ribery was brought down by PSG defender Sylvain Armand on the edge of the box. Barthez then thwarted PSG's Russian midfielder Sergei Semak and goalless it remained until, with just 11 minutes left, Samir Nasri's corner was met by Lorik Cana at the near post and suddenly Marseille were ahead. The jubilant scenes that followed were not only because Marseille finally had a chance to beat their Parisian rivals at the Velodrome for the first time since 2002, but also for the fact that the goalscorer was a PSG player until the start of this season. Lorik Cana, who had been a PSG player at the start of the season, gave his new team their fourth win in their last five matches and a three position advance to seventh in the table. A tense finale was finally brought to a close by the referee's whistle and Marseille had won by a solitary goal. PSG remain in second place, but are now four points behind the champions.
