A spectacular last-gasp volley from midfielder Toni Velamazan earned Espanyol a point in a 2-2 draw with Valencia in La Liga on Sunday. Valencia took the lead after a quick breakaway from a corner on 19 minutes. Fabio Aurelio played a through ball to Francisco Perez Rufete to score with a powerful shot from the edge of the box. But the visitors suffered a double setback just after the half hour mark. Goalkeeper Andres Palop brought down Maxi Rodriguez for a penalty kick. Palop was also sent off. Narrow miss Raul Tamuda beat substitute goalkeeper Santiago Canizares from the penalty spot for the equaliser. The home side were on top against the 10 men, and should have taken the lead after 62 minutes. Ferran Corominas and Alex Fernandez both narrowly failed to get a touch to a cross from substitute Jose Amavisca. But Valencia took the lead against the run of play five minutes later. Miguel Angel Angulo broke through the middle, his shot was saved, but deflected into the net off defender David Garcia. Espanyol kept pressing forward and Dani Garcia should have equalised two minutes from time, heading wide when unmarked. The home side finally levelled the scores. Toni Velamazan hit a great first time volley from the edge of the area after a corner was half cleared. But Valencia could still have grabbed an unlikely win. Marco Di Vaio turned well in the box, but hit his shot well wide, with what was the final kick of the match. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
