Barcelona won their first Spanish League title in six years on Saturday after a second-half header from leading striker Samuel Eto'o earned them a 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened Levante. With second-placed Real Madrid earlier held to a 2-2 draw in an action-packed match at Sevilla, Barcelona now have an unassailable six-point lead at the top of the table. Even if the Catalans lose their remaining two matches they cannot be caught by their arch-rivals because of their better head-to-head record in meetings between the two sides this season. 17th league title Barca only needed a draw to claim their first trophy in six years and their 17th league title after Real Madrid could only draw 2-2 against Sevilla earlier on Saturday evening. Barca had a let off in the 32nd minute when a shot from Felix Dja Ettien appeared to strike the arm of Giovanni van Bronckhorst, but no penalty was awarded. The champions elect did not heed the warnings shown by Levante and they suffered the consequences when a free kick by Alexis was headed on by Edwin Congo and Rivera put the strugglers ahead in the 34th minute. World Player of the Year Ronaldinho had been quiet until the 36th minute when he ran at the Levante defence and fired wide. The Brazilian's temper got the better of him and he was lucky to stay on the pitch after head-butting defender Pablo Pinillos. Stoppage time Barcelona's best chance of the half came in stoppage time when a cross by Oleguer was smacked against the bar by Spain's leading goalscorer Samuel Eto'o. Levante, who sacked coach Bernd Schuster two weeks ago and have lost six out of their last seven games, were nearly presented with a second goal when Valdes threw the ball straight to Mateu Jofre who chested it down and thumped a shot against the post from 35 metres in the 53rd minute. There was a huge sigh of relief and delight amongst the travelling Barca fans when their side drew level on the hour. A corner by Xavi was headed on by Rafael Marquez and Eto'o headed in the equaliser. It was his 24th goal of the season. At the final whistle, coach Frank Rijkaard, players, officials and fans, all celebrated their first league championship of the 21st century. (AP)
