Liverpool fans were in jubilant mood after their team were crowned Champions of Europe in extraordinary circumstances on Wednesday. Ecstatic fans celebrated wildly in public houses and homes across Merseyside (northwest England) after their side clinched the title for the first time in 21 years. Trailing 3-0 at halftime, Liverpool scored three goals in six minutes and then prevailed on penalties 3-2 to win its first European Champions Cup title since 1984. Meanwhile, fans continued to celebrate in Istanbul into the early hours of Thursday morning. It was Liverpool's fifth title, meaning it will be able to keep the trophy for good. Not good enough But it may not be enough to get the team into next year's competition - Liverpool finished in fifth place in the English Premier League, and only the top four gain berths for the next tournament. Now it's up to UEFA to decide whether to change its rules and let Liverpool defend the title. UEFA says it won't reconsider the decision but Liverpool are still living on hope. There has been huge speculation that one of Liverpool's hero's of the night Steven Gerrard could actually be leaving the club. But the captain said after this win he would find it tough to leave. "We beat some great sides in this competition and no one can take away that we deserve to be league winners. I just hope that people above let us defend it. Its called the champs league so the champs should be able to defend it," said Gerrard. (With AP inputs)
