Freedom Soccer League kicks off
Friday marked the inauguration of the so-called Freedom Football (Soccer) League day in Southern Iraq.

Friday marked the inauguration of the so-called Freedom Football (Soccer) League day in Southern Iraq. More than 2,000 young people, from teams in Diwaniyah and the surrounding areas, received uniforms from the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA), sponsored by the Italian and Spanish troops. In all 148 teams will be taking part in the championships which will run until March, and then enter a play-off phase. There are three categories for teams, based on age: youth 8-12 years old; intermediates 13-18 years old and adult 19-25 years old. Today's opening ceremony took place at the Al Khail soccer pitch in Diwaniyah. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
