Buenos Aires:

Velez Sarsfield increased their lead at the top of the standings in Argentina's Clausura competition, following a 3-0 win away at Argentinos Juniors. A penalty from Lucas Castroman put Miguel Angel Russo's side on their way after just one minute, and second half goals from Maximiliano Pellegrino and Leandro Gracian made sure of the victory. With four games left in the season, Velez have 32 points from fifteen games, three ahead of Estudiantes and four ahead of Racing Club - both sides could only draw at home over the weekend. It was not until the 65th minute that Velez managed to stamp their authority on the game. Extending the lead Fabian Cubero crossed from the left and Maximiliano Pellegrino scored with a precise diving header to make it 2-0. Leandro Gracian added a third five minutes from time when he cut in from the left and curled a fine shot past Marcos Guiterrez to make absolutely sure of the points, and 3-0 it stayed until the final whistle. There was still time though for substitute Emanuel Centurion - who had only come on for Marcelo Bravo with ten minutes to go - to be sent off for punching Argentinos striker Gustavo Oberman. Velez secured their ninth win of the campaign and extended their lead to three points at the top of the table after closest rivals Estudiantes and reigning Clausura champions Racing Club were both held to draws at home by lowly opposition. With just four games to go in the Clausura schedule, Velez take on another modest side, Instituto Cordoba, next weekend. (AP)
