Oporto:
A two-all draw between the two Scandinavian rivals, Denmark and Sweden have qualified both teams for the knockout stages of Euro 2004. Denmark were all set to take the three points after two goals from Jon Dahl Tomasson before Mattias Johnson popped up with an equaliser two minutes from the end after Henrik Larsson had scored Sweden's first from the penalty spot. Sweden, Denmark and Italy all finished with five points in Group C but despite Italy's 2-1 win over Bulgaria, the Scandinavian nations go through to the quarter-finals. Group runners-up Denmark will play the Czech Republic on Sunday while Sweden must await the outcome of today's Group D matches. Sweden who had looked so compact in their opening two games looked disjointed and was no surprise therefore when Denmark took the lead through Jon Dahl Tomasson on 28 minutes. That goal seemed to wake up the Swedes, but they found Thomas Sorensen in fine form as he made a great double save to deny Sweden a goal. The second half had barely started when Swden were awarded a penalty for a fould by Sorensen on Henrik Larsson. A harsh decision especially since television replays showed that Sorensen had not made contact with Larsson. Sweden's top scorer duly converted the spot kick for his third goal of the tournament. Denmark refused to let their misfortune dampen their spirits and soon restored their lead when Tomasson grabbed his second of the evening. Sweden though refused to give up and equalised in the dying minutes through Matias Jonson. The only downside for Sweden was the second yellow card picked up by left-back Erik Edman which will rule him out of their quarter-final.Topics mentioned in this article
