Atletico Madrid and Espanyol both failed to take advantage of Sevilla's slip as they fought out a 0-0 draw in Spain's La Liga at the Calderon on Saturday. Goalkeeper Carlos Kameni saved the day for the visitors by keeping out a Fernando Torres penalty just after the hour. The Cameroon international then produced an awesome reflex save to deny the Atletico striker once more in the dying minutes. Atletico Madrid, whose ambitions of returning to Europe were dealt a major blow with a surprise 1-0 defeat at basement side Numancia last weekend, were hoping their good home form would steer them to victory over Espanyol in Spain's La Liga on Saturday. The match was a tentative affair with neither side really willing to push the boat out, although Atletico had by far the better chances. In the 26th minute Antonio Lopez struck a free kick over the crossbar, but only just, and showed a taste of what was to come. Espanyol hit back with a long range shot from Daniel Jarque in the 37th minute, but Leo Franco had it covered. Just before half time Raul Tamudo left the field for treatment for a twisted ankle, but returned in the second half. Atletico striker Fernando Torres then spurned the game's best chance in the 64th minute when his weak penalty was parried by Carlos Kameni. It's no wonder that teams like Manchester United are interested in the Cameroon international. Kameni than made the save of the day when he stopped Torres' shot in the 83rd minute. The ended 0-0 and both teams missed out on the chance to close the gap on Sevilla who lost 1-0 at home to Osasuna. (AP)
