Sao Paulo:
Substitute striker Reinaldo scored a late winner and Santos rallied to defeat Palmeiras 2-1 and moved to top the Brazilian league on Sunday. In other matches, Vasco drew rival Fluminense 1-1 in Rio de Janeiro, while defending champions Corinthians lost 3-2 to Ponte Preta in Campinas. Reinaldo tallied the winner at Palestra Italia stadium after a fast counter in the 86th minute. He beat Paraguay defender Gamarra to a long pass and fired a low left-footer from near the penalty spot. Gamarra had put Palmeiras ahead with a header off a corner kick in the 66th, while Santos equalized two minutes later with an own-goal by Palmeiras defender Paulo Baier. Santos played a man down after the 84th when midfielder Cleber Santana was ejected because of a hard foul on Gamarra. The loss was Palmeiras' third straight to start the season and extended its winless streak to five matches. The four-time national champion, last in the 20-team standings, had never started the Brazilian league with three consecutive losses. Santos, led by coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, got the win despite playing without several regular starters who were rested for the team's Brazilian Cup match against Ipatinga next week. Santos, seeking its third Brazilian championship in five years, has seven points from three matches atop the standings. Fluminense draws with Vasco At Maracana stadium, Fluminense was held to a 1-1 draw by rival Vasco, which also played without most of its starters because of the Brazilian Cup. It plays Volta Redonda next week in the quarterfinals. Midfielder Abedi put Vasco ahead in the 33rd with a booming shot from outside the area, and striker Tuta equalized for Fluminense in the 57th with a shot from inside the area. Vasco is eighth in the 20-team standings with five points from three matches, while Fluminense is second, behind Santos on goal difference. Defending champions Corinthians lost 2-3 to Ponte Preta at Moises Lucarelli stadium. Corinthians played without Argentine international Carlos Tevez and several other regular starters ahead of the team's Copa Libertadores match against Argentina's River Plate this coming week. Roger missed a second-half penalty for Corinthians, which has lost two of its first three matches. Last year's runner-up Internacional jumped to third place, also with seven points, by beating five-time champion Flamengo 1-0 in Porto Alegre. On Saturday, Sao Paulo - facing Palmeiras in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores - routed Santa Cruz 4-0 at Morumbi stadium in Sao Paulo. Goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni netted his 60th career goal - and sixth in 11 matches - with a second-half free kick. Ceni, Brazil's third goalkeeper in the 2002 World Cup, is two goals short of the mark set by Paraguayan Jose Luis Chilavert, the all-time leading scorer as a goalkeeper with 60 goals. Some counts have the Brazilian goalkeeper with 67 goals, but FIFA doesn't credit penalty-kick shootouts and some goals scored in exhibition matches. Forty-two of Ceni's goals came on free kicks and 20 on penalties. In other results, 2001 champion Atletico Paranaense routed Botafogo 4-0 at Maracana stadium on Saturday, while 2003 winner Cruzeiro beat Figueirense 2-0 in Florianopolis on Sunday.
