Newcastle and AZ Alkmaar reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup, and Villarreal held Steaua Bucharest to a 0-0 draw in their first leg match. Alan Shearer scored his 190th and 191st goals for Newcastle, which beat Olympiakos 4-0 and 7-1 on aggregate. Kieron Dyer opened the scoring in the 18th minute, taking a chip from Laurent Robert in the box and twisting around to poke the ball past Olympiakos goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis at the near post. Missed chances Shearer missed two first-half chances, sending one over the bar and a header wide. He finally scored in the 45th minute from a Dyer cross which hit the legs of Nikopolidis as it went in. Newcastle's third goal came in the 54th minute with Nikopolidis scooping Lee Bowyer's header off the line but unable to keep out the midfielder's follow up. Shearer scored again in the 69th minute, running onto a Jermaine Jenas pass, eluding Nikopolidis and chipping the ball into the net. Olympiakos coach Dusan Bajevic was without the injured Rivaldo and the suspended Grigoris Georgatos and Thanassis Kostoulas. It was Newcastle's eighth straight win, a run that has helped it reach the FA Cup semifinals and climb up the Premier League ladder to 11th place after a poor start to the season. AZ Alkmaar joined Newcastle in the final eight with a 2-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk for a 5-2 aggregate victory. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
