La Paz:
Argentina confirmed their place atop the South American world cup qualification group with a 2-1 win against Bolivia in La Paz on Saturday. After opening the scoring with a Jose Castillo header, Bolivia then conceded two second half goals in five minutes through Argentina's Luciano Galletti and Luciano Figueroa to remain at the bottom of the 10 nation group. Galletti had a series of missed chances in the first half - two hitting the cross bar in a period of relative stalemate. The first to break the deadlock was the home side. Bolivia, with Ovidio Messa making his debut as their third coach of the South American qualifying campaign, went ahead with a Jose Castillo header early in the second half. Jose Alfredo Castillo connected with a Danner Pachi left cross in the 49th minute to give Bolivia the lead and its first goal in three qualifiers. But Argentina, who sent a second-string team to the match at 3,600 metres above sea level in La Paz, hit back with two goals in five minutes to record their first win in La Paz since 1973. Luciano Figueroa equalized, also from a header, in the 57th minute and five minutes later Luciano Galetti netted the winning goal on a low shot to the right of goalkeeper Leo Fernandez. The result keeps Argentina top and Bolivia bottom of the 10-nation South American group. Argentina, who survived a penalty appeal with the score at 1-1, have 25 points from 12 games and Bolivia have 10. The top four teams in the group advance to the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany. The fifth-place team will face the Oceania champion in a playoff for another berth. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
