Rome:
Uruguayan midfielder Ruben Olivera scored his first Serie A goal in the 72nd minute to help Juventus beat Fiorentina 1-0 and increase its Italian league lead to six points. AC Milan, which was held to a 0-0 draw in a rain-drenched match at Brescia yesterday, remains in second place. Olivera, a second-half substitute, headed in a corner by Pavel Nedved that was deflected by an initial header from Mauro Camoranesi. "I came in and replaced Emerson and that's not easy, also because I'd never played in that position before," the 21-year-old Olivera said of the off-and-on captain of Brazil, who plays a central midfield role as opposed to his normal position on the wing. "I'm happy for the goal and because we won a difficult game that gives us a lot more room ahead of our rivals," he said. Juventus coach Fabio Capello said he had been thinking about playing Olivera in the center for a while. "He thinks more about attacking than defending, but I think Ruben can learn," Capello said, adding that he hopes Juventus keeps its current lead in the standings until its match with Milan on Dec 19. Fiorentina thought it had earned a penalty when Lilian Thuram tackled Enrico Fantini in the fourth minute of injury time, but referee Stefano Farina did not indicate a foul. Spanish striker Javier Portillo had a second chance as the ball trickled forward, but shot wide. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
