Frankfurt:
Bayer Leverkusen drew 1-1 with VfB Stuttgart in the German Bundesliga on Sunday. With both sides looking for a confidence boost after midweek defeats in the Champions League, it wasn't until the 80th minute that the deadlock was broken. After substitutes Franca and Landon Donovan had combined well, the ball deflected off Zvonimir Soldo into the path of Dimitar Berbatov - and he fired home past Timo Hilderbrand to make it 1-0. Drawing level However, Stuttgart drew level in the 89th minute. Referee Dr Franz-Xaver Wack awarded a penalty against Bernd Schneider after the midfielder tangled with his Germany team-mate Kevin Kuranyi in the area. Leverkusen weren't happy, but replays seemed to prove Dr Wack's decision to be the correct one. Cacau duly despatched the penalty to make it 1-1. Leverkusen came agonisingly close to snatching a winner in the dying seconds. A thunderbolt header from Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker looked to be goal-bound - but Timo Hildebrand saved brilliantly. The final score was one-all, Leverkusen coach Klaus Augenthaler having to be content with a point which keeps his side in fifth place, one place ahead of Stuttgart on goal difference.
