Nice:
Monaco slipped 12 points behind France's Ligue 1 leaders Lyon after they lost 2-1 at Nice in the south coast derby on Saturday. Nice, who started in 14th place with 29 points, went ahead after 13 minutes when Florent Balmont scored a bizarre goal. He took a free kick by the touchline and the ball went in from over 50 metres. Both defenders and attackers missed and it flew straight past Monaco goalkeeper Fabien Audard and into the net. Added spice The match had added spice for Didier Deschamps' side, who were leading 3-0 in the first meeting earlier in the season before Nice fought back for a stunning 4-3 victory. His side began to dominate and were rewarded with a spectacular overhead goal by 19-year-old David Gigliotti 59th minute. The half time substitute latched on to Javier Saviola's cross and acrobatically smashed the ball into the net. Monaco, who started in fourth place on 44 points, nine behind Lyon's 53, though the principality side had a game in hand, piled on the pressure for a second goal, but conceded one instead. Great goal Nineteen-year-old Brazilian substitute Ederson flicked up the ball and hit it from all of 40 metres in the 66th minute to leave Monaco speechless and Nice fans ecstatic. Damien Gregorini made some important saves to deny Monaco, none more so than a flying stop from Lucas Bernardi, who left fly from 30 metres in the 80th minute. Nice held on to win 2-1 and complete the double over their neighbours and rivals. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
