Sao Paulo:
Santos has released World Cup veteran Luizao, after coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo said the player wasn't on his plans for the 2006 season. Luizao, a member of Brazil's squad which won the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan, was acquired from Japan's Nagoya Grampus last September and played only five matches for Santos. "Vanderlei said he didn't need (Luizao) anymore," Luizao's agent Thiago Granado told the Gazeta Press. "We are already looking to negotiate with other clubs". Other changes Midfielder Giovanni, a member of Brazil's 1994 World Cup-winning team, and former FC Porto striker Claudio Pitbull, were also expected to be released in the coming days, local media reported. The three players did not travel with the club to face Mogi Mirim in the second round of the Sao Paulo state championship today. Santos, which hasn't won the competition in 22 years, debuted on Thursday with a 1-1 draw against Sao Bento de Sorocaba. Giovanni had signed with Santos after ending his contract with Greek champion Olympiakos last May, while Pitbull arrived last October. All three players had contracts to the end of the year.
