Buenos Aires:
River Plate defeated Paraguay's Libertad 1-0 on Thursday to become the final team to advance to the second round of the Copa Libertadores. Libertad, which had already qualified, finished atop Group 8 with 11 points, followed by River with nine. Meanwhile, Ecuador's El Nacional held host Paulista of Sao Paulo, Brazil, to a scoreless draw and both were eliminated with six points each. River dominated possession throughout and finally was rewarded in the 82nd minute when Zapata converted off a header by Ernesto Farias. Libertad, which already had clinched the group, appeared content to defend. Libertad goalkeeper Aldo Bobadilla deflected a dramatic overhead kick by Jairo Patino in the 30th minute and moments later blocked a cross from Zapata. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
