A bitterly cold Thursday night in Pamplona saw Osasuna entertain Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Primera Liga's last game before the winter break. On paper it was a straightforward proposition. Osasuna, second behind leaders Barcelona in the table, were protecting the last 100 per cent home record in the league and Atletico - twelfth - were looking for their first win in eight games. But the near-frozen pitch proved a great leveller early on and it was not until the 22nd minute that Pierre Webbo produced the first meaningful attempt on goal - Atletico 'keeper Roberto just managing to keep the ball out of his goal. Soon after, the visitors broke through against the run of play - midfielder Gabi tried his luck from a distance, the ball struck a post and Bulgarian striker Martin Petrov smashed home the rebound for his first goal of the season. Atletico's lead lasted just four minutes though as Javier Flano's long ball was headed down by Carlos Cuellar, Francisco Punal tidied up the loose ball and Raul Garcia stepped up to equalise on the half hour. Four minutes after that the home side found themselves in the lead. The Atletico defence pushed too far forward, Ludovic Delporte broke down the left and Bernardo Romeo made it 2-1 with his third goal of the season. After the break, the game became a one-sided affair with Osasuna striving for a third goal without quite finding the finish. The closest that they came to a third goal was inside the last few minutes as first Romeo found the post with a header from Raul Garcia's cross. Then, in stoppage time, Garcia again found Romeo in space in front of goal, but this time the ball bounced off the crossbar. In the end it hardly mattered as Atletico never looked likely to score at the other end and the match ended 2-1. Osasuna's ninth consecutive home win takes them to within two points of leaders Barcelona, while Atletico will experience a somewhat muted festive season following their sixth defeat of the campaign.
