Runaway leaders of Ligue 1 against resurgent visitors - Lyon against Monaco looked like a tasty dish to serve up to the faithful at the Stade Gerland on Saturday. The reality proved very different, though as is so often the case, the highlights can be misleading. Sylvain Monsoreau had an early opportunity to give Monaco the lead - Cris tested Italian goalkeeper Flavio Roma shortly afterwards. But attacking intent was in woefully short supply. Deadball situations provided the best route for potential excitement - Lyon midfielder Juninho Pernambucano's 30-metre free kick forced Flavio Roma to tip the ball over the bar. Though the state of their pitch almost cost Lyon dear. A terrible 'bobble' caused a heart-stopping moment for goalkeeper Gregory Coupet in the 55th minute - not that he looked too bothered afterwards. Juninho and Kim Kallstrom both went close for Gerard Houllier's side late on. But 0-0 was about as much as this game merited. A dismal advert for French football and of no particular use to Monaco as they attempt to turn a flirtation with relegation into something more substantial.Topics mentioned in this article
