Sao Paulo:
Four-time Brazilian champion Palmeiras fired coach Jair Picerni on Saturday and hired Caio Junior as his replacement for the 2007 season. Caio Junior was being pursued by several clubs after leading Parana to fifth place in the Brazilian league, securing the club a spot in the Copa Libertadores for the first time in its 17-year history. Picerni joined Palmeiras late in the season and helped it escape relegation to the second division. Picerni's tenure lasted less than 40 days. Palmeiras finished 16th in the 20-team competition, 16 points behind Parana and 34 behind champion Sao Paulo. The bottom four clubs were demoted. Junior's deal runs until the end of 2007. Financial details were not disclosed. He will be officially introduced in January. Fans had been pressuring Palmeiras club directors for changes ahead of next season, hoping to avoid the dismal campaign of recent years. Palmeiras, the 1999 Copa Libertadores champion, hasn't won a significant first-division title since the 2000 Rio-Sao Paulo tournament. It was relegated to the Brazilian league's second division in 2002, but won the competition the following year and returned to the top flight. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
