Barcelona, Spain:

Goals by Ronaldinho and Eidur Gudjohnsen in the first 18 minutes of FC Barcelona's 2-0 win over Werder Bremen propelled the defending champion to the second round of the Champions League on Tuesday. "The team made a huge effort tonight to get the lead," Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard said. "We played attractive football. It's not always easy, but we played well, got the result and are into the next round." With Barcelona needing a win to advance, the Spanish team took control early. Ronaldinho scored in the 13th minute, his second Champions League goal of the season coming from a deft free kick on the edge of the area. The Brazil playmaker surprised the Bremen defense by rolling his shot along the ground and inside the right post. "They shouldn't have jumped up - it was an error by our defense," Bremen manager Thomas Schaaf said. "The ball should never go through the wall like that." Five minutes later, Barca forward Ludovic Giuly broke free of defender Pierre Wome to receive Ronaldinho's cross inside the area before centering to Gudjohnsen, who tapped it into the top of the net. "It was very important to put pressure on them early and then we fought and played hard the whole game and held on to the lead," Rijkaard said. "Bremen started a little timidly and maybe they felt more pressure than us." Barcelona should have made it 3-0 in the 35th after a run by Deco set up Gudjohnsen, who beat two defenders before his left-footed shot from inside the area hit the post. An unmarked Giuly deflected the rebound over the crossbar. Though missing injured forwards Samuel Eto'o, Lionel Messi and Javier Saviola, Barcelona has scored 20 goals in its last seven games. "I'm very happy - you see the difference in the way the team played tonight," Rijkaard said. "The team went out with a great mentality and the result is great for us." Barcelona finished second in Group A with 11 points, two behind Chelsea, which beat Levski Sofia 2-0. Bremen finished in third place with 10. Bremen rid itself of the early jitters and came out strongly in the second half, but was forced to play catch-up. Midfielder Tim Borowski tested Victor Valdez in the 46th, forcing the Barcelona goalkeeper into stopping a low shot from just inside the left side of the area in the 46th. Bremen continued to pressure with long balls and midfielder Daniel Jensen's curling cross from five meters outside the area struck the left corner of the bar in the 61st. Bremen forward Diego forced Valdez into a close-range save in injury time, but the Bundesliga leader ran out of time. (AP)
