Marseille:
Marseille lost ground on the French leaders Lyon when they went down to a 2-0 defeat at home to Sochaux in Ligue 1 on Tuesday. Marseille found the visitors in positive mood and only a goalline clearance by Johnny Ecker prevented Tunisian striker Francileudo Santos from scoring after he had rounded Fabien Barthez. Sochaux, who started the game in seventh place, eight points behind their hosts, thought they had scored midway through the first half when Ibrahim Tall and Sylvain Monsoreau went up for the ball which ended in the back of the net. But the referee disallowed the goal when he spotted Monsoreau had knocked the ball into the net with his hand. Sochaux were by far the better side in the first half and they came out in second half in the same mood. That was evident after 53 minutes when Marseille were punished for sloppy defending as Santos ran on to a flicked through ball from Tall to put the visitors 1-0 ahead. The home fans were stunned into silence on 69 minutes when their defence allowed Romain Pitau to slip through and double Sochaux's lead. An inept Marseille side offered little throughout and Sochaux ran out deserved 2-0 winners. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
