New Delhi:

In what would be a record of sorts, Border Security Force sealed their spot in the pre-quarterfinals of the Durand Cup after a nerve-wracking 13-12 tie-break victory over Salgaocar Sports Club, Goa, at the Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday. After the teams were locked goalless at the end of a drab 90 minutes, the match went to the shoot-out, which tested the resolve of both teams. The policemen now take their place in the group, which also has JCT, Phagwara, and Tata Football Academy, Jamshedpur. The shootout had its fair share of drama as well and saw all 22 players convert their first spot kicks. Salgaocar's Francis Fernandes was the unlucky player whose second attempt came off the crossbar. BSF's Samrat Choudhury converted the next shot to send his team through. Salgaocar coach Savio Medeira played mind games and substituted keeper Milagrio Medeira with Krishna Kalsiya at 8-7 in the tie-breaker. When he failed to stop the next three shots, Micky Fernades, a midfielder, stood in goal. As it turned out, that did not help the Goan club either. There were some external interference during the 26-shot tie-breaker, too. With the teams level 6-6 in the sudden-death phase, two of the ground staff abruptly barged into the field and started carrying out their daily maintenance work, absolutely ignorant of the situation.
