Seoul:
Korean side Taejon Citizen overcame frigid conditions to score an emphatic 6-0 home victory against Mohun Bagan of India in an AFC Champions League Zone Two (East) Round Three first leg match on Wednesday. The cold and damp conditions at the Daejeon World Cup Stadium proved a big advantage to the home side who scored four goals in the first half to deal serious damage to the Champions League hope of Mohun Bagan. Defender Kim Young-kwen put Taejon into the lead as early as the seventh minute, heading in a cross from the left. Lee Kwang-woo then extended the lead in the 18th minute, converting from the penalty spot. The Indians looked extremely uncomfortable playing in temperatures of just three degrees Celsius and allowed two more goals in the first half as Taejon took complete control of the tie. Gong Oh-kyun hammered home a shot from just inside the box in the 24th minute and then scored his second goal of the night a minute from half-time with a similar effort from the left side of the box. Taejon midfielder Kim Eun-jong was in scintillating form throughout the match and he sent in a superb cross from the right flank eight minutes after the restart which was headed home by Kim Kwang-sun. Kim Eun-jong then wrapped up the scoring for the home side in the 73rd minute to put his side 6-0 up. Despite the scoreline, Taejon coach Lee Tae-ho praised the visitors who showed plenty of initiative in attack despite failing to find the net in the unfamiliar conditions. "This Indian team is much stronger than the Macau team that we played in the last round. The weather was very cold and I think that prevented Mohun from showing their best form," said Lee. Mohun coach Subrata Bhattacharjee concurred, saying that his team had a torrid time trying to acclimatise to the conditions. "The weather was very cold and the team were not comfortable at all. We were not able to adjust to the conditions and the ground gave us problems as well," lamented Bhattacharjee. "The players kept on slipping on the wet pitch and we were not able to play well. Two of our key players didn't come with us to Korea and we suffered in their absence. However, I am proud that my players had done their very best." "We like to play attacking football and this is the only way we know how to play," added Bhattacharjee. "We had two chances to score but we could not capitalise on our chances." On Tuesday, Shimizu S-Pulse of Japan mauled South China of Hong Kong 5-0, while India's Churchill Brothers were held to a 1-1 draw by Osotspa of Thailand.Topics mentioned in this article
