London:
Arsenal ended its four-game losing streak on Sunday, but needed luck to do it. Playing in one of two London derbys, Arsenal won 1-0 at Fulham to move within four points of league-leading Liverpool. Also in London, Tottenham and Chelsea played a 0-0 stalemate. Liverpool, which won its seventh straight league match beating West Ham 2-0 on Saturday, has 30 points, with defending champion Arsenal edging up to 26. Manchester United has 22 points in third place while Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton are on 20. Outside the British capital, 17-year-old Wayne Rooney scored in the 80th as a substitute to give Liverpool-based Everton a 1-0 victory at Leeds - its first win at Elland Road in 51 years. Rooney, billed as the newest star in English football, also came off the bench and scored the winner in injury time against Arsenal two weeks ago to start the Gunners' just-ended four-game spin. Also on Sunday, Aston Villa played a 0-0 draw at Blackburn. Villa 'keeper Peter Enckelman frustrated the Rovers with Andy Cole continuing to miss scoring chances for Blackburn. In Sunday's other match, Sunderland drew 1-1 at Charlton in a game between sides at the bottom of the standings. Gary Rowett equalized for Charlton in the 77th after Tore Andre Flo scored for Sunderland in the 15th. Sunderland is still winless in three matches under new manager Howard Wilkinson. Bolton is in last place with 8 points. Sunderland and West Brom have 10 and Charlton has 11 points. Arsenal got the deciding goal in the 31st when Fulham's French striker Steve Marlet sliced the ball past Fulham goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar off a corner from Arsenal's Thierry Henry for the own-goal. The Gunners' victory snapped a string of four straight losses - all by scores of 2-1 - against Blackburn and Everton in league play and Auxerre and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. It was the Gunners' worst run of consecutive losses since 1983. Arsenal also seemed to get a break when referee Jeff Winter denied penalty claims by Fulham after Gunners' defender Sol Campbell brought down Luis Boa Morte in the area. Tottenham's home record against Chelsea continued to be poor with the scoreless draw. The last time the Spurs won at White Hart Lane against their London neighbours was 15 years ago. Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini saved the match for the Blues with a string of strong saves including a 25-meter volley from Jamie Redknapp that he tipped over the bar.
