Monterrey:
Guillermo 'Guille' Franco scored with five minutes left and Monterrey edged Tigres 2-1 to advance to the Mexican League finals. Tigres won the first leg 1-0 on Wednesday, but Monterrey advanced as the higher seed on a 2-2 aggregate. Tigres was content to fall back into a prevent defense. Changing strategy The strategy worked for the visitors, as the teams went 0-0 into halftime. But in the 57th minute, Claudio Suarez pulled the jersey of Monterrey's streaking Franco, setting up a penalty shot which Luis Perez converted for 1-0. Then it was Tigres turn to press, with Argentine Nestor Silvera feeding Brazil's Walter Gaitan for the tying score 16 minutes later, and keeping the dream alive for Tigres. Tigres had entered the playoffs as the eighth and final seed but toppled defending champion America of Mexico City in the opening round. Franco took a pass from Carlos Casartelli and scored in the 85th to put Monterrey ahead for good, despite a late flurry of offensive chances from Tigres. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
