Sao Paulo:
Brazil star Roberto Carlos has said he is in talks to renew his contract with Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid, most likely on a multiyear basis. "I like Spain very much and I would like to stay there," Roberto Carlos said yesterday. He said the objective of the talks was to extend his current contract, which expires in June 2005, for several years. However, he declined to say how many years the new contract might encompass. Roberto Carlos was in Sao Paulo to promote an annual charity drive called Soccer Players Against Hunger. The drive features a charity game pitting Brazilian soccer stars against sports reporters and entertainment personalities. The charity game was scheduled for yesterday. Fans pay admission in the form of food packages which are distributed to the poor. "This is the least we soccer players can do for the country that has given us so much," he said. The 30-year-old defender has played with Real Madrid since 1996 and helped Brazil win the 2002 World Cup. He also played for Brazil in 1998. In the early 1990s, he played for Palmeiras in Sao Paulo. He said he would like to return to Brazil "eventually" and play for Santos, where Pele once played. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
