Madrid:
Fernando Torres signed a one-year contract extension with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, tying him to the club until 2009. However, the buy-out clause in Torres' new contract has been reduced, making it easier for the striker to move to another club before his deal expires. Prospective buyers can now pay 50.8 million dollars to rescind Torres' contract. Previously, the sum was 114.4 million dollars. Torres described his new buy-out clause as "symbolic". "In the end, it's not relevant and it doesn't matter what figure is stipulated in a buy-out clause because, more than money, what matters is the intention of the two parties and their word," the Spain international was quoted as saying on Atletico's Web site. Last season, Torres reportedly attracted interest from several top European clubs. Manchester United and Inter Milan were said to have made approaches for the 22-year-old striker in the offseason. The Madrid-born striker rose through Atletico's youth ranks and has been the team's leading scorer in each of the last four seasons, scoring 77 goals in 206 matches in all competitions. Torres led Spain's attack at the World Cup and has scored 14 goals in 37 international matches. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
