Lyon, France:
Fred and Tiago scored first-half goals on Wednesday, leading Lyon to a 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League. Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas made several saves to prevent further goals as Lyon put the ball on target nine times in the first-half. Florent Malouda hit the crossbar. Nine-time European champion Madrid rarely threatened goalkeeper Gregory Coupet, and Lyon beat Madrid at home for the second successive season. On his return to former club Lyon, Madrid midfielder Mahamadou Diarra was booked for diving late in the match. "We could have been further ahead at halftime," Lyon coach Gerard Houllier said. "The first half was sublime to watch, then we controlled the match and tried to make them do all the running." Also Wednesday, Steaua Bucharest beat Dynamo Kiev 4-1 to top Group E ahead of Lyon. Houllier handed Patrick Mueller his first start of the season in central defence, and Sidney Govou partnered Fred in attack. Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello picked Antonio Cassano and Raul Gonzalez to play behind Ruud van Nistelrooy in attack. Madrid striker Ronaldo missed the match through injury, and Diarra was selected in midfield against his former teammates after joining from Lyon. Juninho flattened Diarra twice within the opening four minutes with heavy challenges, and was lucky to escape a caution. In the seventh minute, Juninho tried his luck from 34 meters (yards), but Casillas punched away. In the 11th, Fred timed his run perfectly to meet Juninho's lofted pass and then confidently beat Casillas with a lob. Casillas then made a brilliant reflex save to turn away Malouda's powerful downward header in the 14th. Tiago made it 2-0 in the 31st after running onto a pass from Govou and poking the ball under the body of Casillas. Two minutes later, Casillas fumbled Juninho's free kick from 40 meters but reacted superbly to palm away Fred's follow-up header, and the Spain goalkeeper pounced two minutes later to stop Anthony Reveillere's close-range shot. Malouda then hit the crossbar. In the 45th, Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro failed to control a high ball and Fred pounced to head the ball narrowly over, and Juninho then tested Casillas again with a free kick. Madrid failed to muster a shot on Coupet's goal until substitute Jose Antonio Reyes tried his luck in the 49th. Capello then took off the ineffective David Beckham in the 55th. Casillas pushed away a shot from Tiago in the 58th, and dived low to repel Juninho's free kick in the 62nd. In the 69th, Casillas was beaten but Tiago's 25-meter shot curled over the crossbar. Van Nistelrooy broke free down the right in the 79th but shot into the side of the net with the unmarked Robinho screaming for the ball. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
