French football's south coast derby drew a passionate crowd to the Stade Velodrome on Sunday, to see Marseille take on Nice in the Championnat with both sides running into form. But the visitors were hit twice, early on in the first half, and never quite recovered. Just three minutes into the game, Marseille's impressive 17-year-old midfielder Samir Nasri gave Pegguy Luyindula the space to shoot and the former Lyon striker found the back of the net with a fierce right foot drive. A little over 10 minutes later, the home side doubled their lead. Benoit Pedretti's corner caused panic in the Nice defence, the ball fell to Luyindula on the edge of the box and the finish was even better this time. Half chances Luyindula subsequently hit the crossbar and Marseille could have had four or five in the first half. But in the second, Nice created several half-chances of their own without ever threatening a serious comeback. The best of them fell to second half substitute Edgaras Jankauskas but the Lithuanian international's volley bounced wide. Marseille held on for all three points and move up to fifth in the table, below Auxerre on goal difference. Nice remain 11th, with the second worst defence in the league. (AP)
