The Women's World Cup tournament was originally scheduled to be held in China, but was moved to the United States because of a SARS epidemic. And the stage had seemed set for another triumph for the reigning champions, the US having advanced through a tough group and then with a narrow 1-0 quarterfinal victory over Norway. But they found themselves a goal down in the 15th minute after a well-worked corner kick set-piece from the Germans. Kerstin Garefrekes' header glanced off the crossbar and into the net. It was only the second goal conceded by the United States in the whole tournament, and the first time they had trailed in five matches. Germany withstood anything the USA had to offer in reply, with goalkeeper Silke Rottenberg in particularly fine form. It remained 1-nil until the 91st minute, when Germany's Maren Meinert broke American hearts with a second for her side. And with the hosts utterly demoralised, Birgit Prinz added another in the dying seconds just for good measure, for a final score of 3-nil. It was the USA's first loss in the World Cup since the 1995 semifinal against Norway. Germany will play the winner of the Sweden-Canada match in the final next Sunday. The United States, meanwhile, will face the other semifinal loser for third place. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
