Berlin:
The World Cup has ended early for Germany captain Michael Ballack. Ballack has an inflamed left knee and will miss Saturday's third-place match against Portugal in Stuttgart. "The doctors advised against him playing," the German soccer federation (DFB) said on Friday. Defenders Per Mertesacker and Arne Friedrich also will miss the match because of injuries. Mertesacker had surgery on his left heel and Friedrich twisted his knee. Midfielder Tim Borowski broke off Friday's practice after 20 minutes with a foot injury. It was not immediately known how serious it was. It was Germany's first practice after Tuesday's 2-0 semifinal loss to Italy. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
