London:A 70th-minute goal from Charlton's Chris Powell, only his second in the Premiership, gave his side the points in a highly combative 1-0 win over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Monday. Despite the lion's share of the play and several clear chances for a desperately unlucky Gustavo Poyet, Spurs could not breach a stubborn Charlton defence and have now not scored in their last four matches. Charlton extend a remarkable record in London derbies to 12 unbeaten matches and now lie an impressive seventh in the Premiership table. Tottenham entertained Charlton Athletic, hoping to improve their poor run. They had lost their last three games by the margin of 4-0. It was Tottenham who had the first chance at scoring in the 32nd minute as Les Ferdinand with a header produced a reflex save from the Charlton keeper. Charlton had a few chances of their own, the best in stoppage time. The home side's Uruguayan midfielder Gus Poyet almost scored with the last action of the half. Charlton however managed to clear the ball. The second half also saw Spurs create the better chances. Poyet had two opportunities to score but he was denied by the Charlton keeper. In the 70th minute, the Spurs found themselves a goal down. A bad defensive error and thirty year old left back Chris Powell managed to get a touch and score only his second goal for Charlton. Poyet nearly found the equaliser three minutes from time. But he was unlucky once again, with his header coming off the cross bar. Charlton held on to win 1-0 and move up to seventh place in the premiership table.
