New Delhi:

Reduced to 10 men after their ace defender Osumanu Husseni was given marching orders early in the match, Zee Churchill buckled under pressure and suffered a humiliating 0-5 defeat at the hands of Mahindra United in the final of 114th Durand Cup Football tournament here today. Four-time finalists Mahindra's triumph today enabled the Mumbai outfit to win the tournament for the second time, having earlier beaten East Bengal 2-1 in 1998. What promised to be an absorbing battle between the two sides after Churchill's sensational win over East Bengal in semifinal, turned out to be an one-sided affair, with Mahendra ruling the roost for most the match today. Zee Churchill suffered the first jolt early in the first half when they conceded a penalty goal. The Goan outfit's Ghanian recruit, Husseni, in a desperate attempt to prevent a Mahindra's key midfielder Jules Alberto Dias powerful shot from entering the goal, handled the ball inside the penalty area and the referee promptly gave Husseni marching orders and awarded a spotkick. Jules made no mistake with a rasping shot. And this broadly changed the complexion of the match, as Churchill never recovered to ward off the barrage of raids by the rival team. (PTI)
