Rio de Janeiro:
Flamengo said on Thursday it had acquired striker Savio, a former Real Madrid star who also played for Brazil's national team. Savio returns to Flamengo a decade after he left the five-time national champions for a career in Spain, the club said on its web site. Flamengo officials hoped Savio's arrival would calm the dissent among players, upset at the sudden firing of popular coach Waldemar Lemos on Tuesday. Lemos was replaced by Ney Franco, of the little-known Ipatinga club, and Flamengo drew 2-2 with Santos in his debut in a league game on Wednesday. Flamengo, which won a record five national titles in 1980, '82, '83, '87 and '92, has struggled in recent years and now is in 11th place in the 20-club first division.
