Southampton:Liverpool missed the chance to move to the top of the English Premiership League table on Wednesday night. A penalty and an own goal condemned them to a shock 2-0 defeat against Southampton at the St Mary's Stadium. The Saints have now won five of their last seven games. Liverpool travelled to Southampton, having left out Michael Owen presumably to have him fit for the big one against Arsenal and the home side put some early pressure. Nicolas Anelka responded to that by creating a chance for Jari Litmanen. But that looping effort just went over the bar. Anelka who's said that he wants to stay on with Liverpool even after his loan period finishes, was at it again. The Southampton goalkeeper Paul Jones was upto the challenge though. In the 61st minute, Saints substitute Matt Oakley was badly tackled by Sami Hyypia. James Beattie put the home side ahead confidently tucking the spot kick past Liverpool's Jerzey Dudek. It was Beattie's 11th goal of the season. Ten minutes later, it was disaster when Liverpool substitute John Arne Riise's header went in for an own goal and Liverpool stand in boss Phil Thomspon could only hold his head in despair. After another missed chance from Liverpool, Southampton held on for the 2-0 win, which means they have now won five of thier last 7 games while Liverpool missed their chance to go to the top of the standings.
