Frankfurt:England beat Paraguay 1-0 in the teams' World Cup opener after a third-minute own-goal. An unfortunate own-goal by defender Carlos Gamarra gave England full points from their opening fixture. David Beckham's cross-glanced in by Carlos Gamarra in the 4th minute of the game had Paraguay on the backfoot immediately. The attacks came in waves with Paraguay off to the most shaky start possible. Michael Owen failed to convert a chance in the 10th minute after a defence splitting through ball from Steven Gerrard. The Paraguyans seemed to wake up in the dying minutes of the first half but Nelson Valdes' shot went just wide in the 47th minute and England went in to the break one goal ahead. Valdes was beginning to look threatening in attack for the blue shirts in 64th minute but the striker failed to fire past Robinson. England's fine passing set up a chance for Frank Lampard just outside the box in the 73rd minute. The Chelsea midfielder's shot was saved brilliantly by Bobadilla, who kept his team in the match England took three points from their first fixture, despite putting in a somewhat disappointing performance. They play Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday.
