Barcelona, Spain:
FC Barcelona has said it will fire coach Louis van Gaal when a payoff deal is reached. Barcelona general director Xavier Perez Farguell made the announcement after a two-hour meeting of the club's board of directors. "We have begun conversations to try to resolve a settlement with the coach as rapidly as possible," Perez Farguell said. The Web site of Barcelona-based newspaper Sport reported yesterday that Perez Farguell went to the Dutchman's house in nearby Sitges after the announcement in an attempt to strike a deal as soon as possible. Barcelona plays a friendly match against Benfica in Lisbon tomorrow and visits Atletico de Madrid in the Spanish league on Sunday. Ramon Salabert, the Catalan club's treasurer, said earlier yesterday that van Gaal's dismissal would cost the club $3.9 million in compensation. However, news agency Efe said that van Gaal expected 50 per cent more, a sum agreed when he signed his contract in May. His contract runs until June 2005. The 51-year-old coach was widely expected to be fired outright yesterday following the team's latest league defeat at Celta de Vigo on Sunday. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
