Costa Rica opened its World Cup preparations with a 2-0 loss to a Catalonia select side on Wednesday. The team allowed a goal in each half and made little impact in the friendly before a crowd of 8,155 at Olympic Stadium. Francisco 'Piti' Medina, who plays for second-division Spanish team Ciudad de Murcia, gave Catalonia the lead in the eighth minute. Roger Garcia added a penalty in the 65th minute. Catalonia was without FC Barcelona's Xavi Hernandez and Carles Puyol, Liverpool's Luis Garcia and Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas due to their World Cup commitments with Spain. Costa Rica, which was without injured defender Gilberto Martinez, has World Cup warm-up games against Ukraine on May 28 and the Czech Republic on May 30. Alexandre Guimaraes' side kicks off the World Cup with a Group A match against host Germany on June 9. It also faces Poland and Ecuador. Like several other Spanish regions including the Basque Country, players native to Catalonia occasionally gather to compete in friendlies against international teams although don't compete in official competitions. Lineups: Catalonia: Victor Valdes (Albert Jorquera, 56); Sergio Sanchez, Oleguer Presas (Oriol Lozano, 56) Daniel Jarque (David Belenguer, 46), Joan Capdevila (Fernando Navarro, 46), Gabri Garcia (Jordi Tarres, 46), Sergio Gonzalez, Roger Garcia, Jordi Martinez (Oriol "Uri" Santos, 84), Oscar Serrano (Abraham Gonzalez, 76), Francisco "Piti" Medina (Joan Verdu, 46). Costa Rica: Alvaro Mesen (Jose Francisco Porras, 46); Harold Wallace (Jervis Drummond, 46) Michael Rodriguez (Michael Umana, 80), Luis Marin, Leo Gonzalez (Gabriel Badilla, 76), Carlos Hernandez (Randall Azofeifa, 46) Dany Fonseca (Cristian Bolanos, 62), Douglas Sequeira, Walter Centeno, Ronald Gomez (Kurt Bernard, 80), Alvaro Saborio (Paulo Wanchope, 62).
