London:
Liverpool cast aside its poor Premier League form on Sunday with a hard-earned 1-0 win over Manchester City in the third round of the FA Cup. The victory came courtesy of a Danny Murphy penalty and was Liverpool's first win in any competition since the mid-December League Cup triumph over Aston Villa. England midfielder Murphy struck a minute into the second half when Vladimir Smicer's cross struck Marc-Vivien Foe's upstretched hand and referee Uriah Rennie pointed to the spot. The goal stung Man City into action, but it lacked the cutting edge to break down a well-drilled Liverpool defence. Man City was forced to shoot from distance and Kevin Horlock's 25-yard effort flew high over the bar. Even when it did succeed in pushing Liverpool open, City's finishing was poor, with Foe slicing wildly over from 12 yards and Eyal Berkovic placing the tamest of headers into goalkeeper Chris Kirkland's hands. In Sunday's other games, Fulham overwhelmed a poor Birmingham City 3-1. Fulham striker Louis Saha's neat finish at the beginning of the second half added to first-half efforts from Fecundo Sava and Bjarne Goldbaek to earn the home side its first win in six games. Birmingham got a late consolation goal through Stern John but Fulham could have had four or five. The majority of the third round games were played on Saturday with the shock result coming when high-flying Everton was beaten 2-1 by struggling third division side Shrewsbury Town. Last season's runner-up Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 1-0 and two goals each from Matt Jansen and Dwight Yorke gave Blackburn a 4-1 win over Aston Villa. Bolton drew 1-1 with Sunderland, earning a replay game, while Southampton completely outplayed Tottenham for a 4-0 win. Defending champion Arsenal, Manchester United, Leeds, West Ham, Charlton and West Bromwich Albion all won through to the fourth round. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
