Madrid:
Goals from Raul Gonzalez, Brazilian Flavio Conceicao and Zinedine Zidane allowed Real Madrid to sink Sevilla 3-0 and move into second place in the Spanish league on Thursday. In a rescheduled 12th-round match, Raul lifted Madrid into the lead following a superb lob cross into the area from the left wing by Luis Figo in the 10th minute. Flavio put in the second in the 29th minute with a shot from 20 metres out that surprised goalkeeper Antonio Notario. It was the Brazilian midfielder's first league goal for Madrid and his second with the side since signing from Deportivo de La Coruna in 2000. After a tight, fast-moving first half, the two goals left Sevilla zonked and the game slumped into a dismal kick-about in the rain with little creativity from either side. Madrid's right winger Michel Salgado was stretchered off the pitch three minutes into the second half after Sevilla defender Pablo Alfaro appeared to intentionally stand on his knee. A minute later, Sevilla's Javi Navarro was sent off when he committed a similar foul on Ronaldo. French star Zidane sealed the 3-0 victory when he side-footed the ball in from 10 metres out after Notario had punched a Ronaldo cross poorly away from goal in the 74th minute. The result shifted Madrid from fourth to second place with 30 points, five less than leader Real Sociedad. Defending champion Valencia now lie at No. 3 with 28 points.
