Liverpool:
An early goal by Senegal's El Hadji Diouf and a late goal by Michael Owen gave Liverpool a 2-0 victory on Tuesday over first-division Sheffield United and a place in the League Cup final. Liverpool advanced 3-2 on aggregate to reach its ninth League Cup final. The game was level on aggregate at 2-2 after regulation and Liverpool had the advantage on away goals. However, under the rules of the League Cup the away-goal rule did not come into effect until 30 minutes of extra time. By that stage, Liverpool didn't need it as Owen scored after 17 minutes of extra overtime to clinch a spot in the March 2 final in Cardiff, Wales. Senegal's Diouf got Liverpool's critical goal in the 9th minute as the Reds dominated the first half but failed to build on their advantage after the African's goal. Owen set up the goal as he twisted to create space and fired a shot on United 'keeper Paddy Kenny. Kenny made the save but Diouf scored on the rebound from 15 yards. Sheffield United held its own in the second half and defended better but the Blades were offered few scoring chances. The first 15 minutes of overtime were uneventful with United unable to muster an offense, setting the stage for Owen's clincher. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
