English Premiership champions Manchester United finished their league season in style with a 2-1 win away to Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday. But it needed a 79th minute penalty from striker Ruud van Nistelrooy - the Dutchman's 25th goal of the campaign seeing him top the Premiership scoring charts - to secure victory. Everton's defeat, combined with Blackburn's 4-0 thrashing of Tottenham, meant David Moyes' men missed out on a UEFA Cup place. But for Everton, a club more used to fighting relegation battles in recent seasons, finishing seventh in the table was no mean achievement. However the season finished disappointingly for Everton's 17-year-old striker, Wayne Rooney, who sustained a knee injury that will force him out of England's friendly away to South Africa in Durban on May 22.
