Bhutia guides Bagan to victory
Defending champions Mohun Bagan down Salgaocar by a solitary goal to move to the second place in the oil PSU National Football League.

Defending champions Mohun Bagan warded off a second half challenge to down Salgaocar by a solitary goal to move to the second place in the oil PSU National Football League at the Nehru Stadium here today. For Bagan, who lost to Salgaocar in the first leg, it was a sweet revenge as they scored the all important goal in the 57th minute through Baichung Bhutia following a counter move. Medio Basudeb Mondal from the right send a diagonal pass to Renedy Singh on the left. the latter send a measured cross inside the box for Bhutia who despatched the ball to the far end with a gentle tap. Bagan, who were seen defending their citadel particulary in the second-half, had a chance to increase the lead in the dying minutes but Sunil Chettri who was unmarked ended in shooting at the bar from close off a pass from Renedy Singh. Salgaocar had the major share of exchanges and scoring chances but lack of finishing was their folly as Jatin Bist and Dharamjit Singh twice failed to score from inside the box. With this win, Bagan moved to second place with 25 points from 14 matches. While Salgaocar slipped to third place with 24 points from as many matches. East Bengal is leading the table with 34 points.
