A late goal in injury time by Rui Wanderley Weis helped Vasco hold Zee Churchill to a 1-1 draw in a 6th edition National Football League match at the Nehru stadium today. Abdul Ganiyu Saley put Zee Churchill ahead in the 37th minute when his firm grounder hit the far post and went in off a free kick taken by Aqueel Ansari. Arlem sponsored Vasco staged a superb fight back to restore parity in the injury time, when Brazilian Weis, essaying a rasping drive between Churchill defenders from inside the box, hit upright. Vasco, who dominated the second half, were unlucky in not getting full points as twice Weis tried to hit the post. Keeper Ansah also came to the rescue of Zee Churchill when he dived to his right to parry the ball away off a fierce shot from Weis. Referee S M Balu showed yellow cards to Vasco's Seby Dias, Angelo Colaco and keeper Rogerio Ramos. Vasco' coach Derrick Pereira, who lost his temper after referee showed yellow card to Ramos, argued with Balu, following which the latter ordered the fourth referee to send Pereira out of the ground. Zee Churchill, who collected eight points from four matches and are tied with HAL and Mahindras, move on to top of the table by virtue of better goal difference. Vasco with one win, two draws and one loss have five points from as many matches. Both teams matched evenly with play confined to midfield for better part of the first half. Vasco had the first chance to go ahead midway in the first half. Zee Churchill, Goa's league champions, failed to live up to their reputation with their midfield failing to function especially in the second half. Although they held territorial advantage in the last quarter of the first half, they could not penetrate deep into the rival half. Zee Churchill surged ahead in the 37th minute, when Abdul Ganiyu Saley unleashed a firm grounder that hit the post before entering the net. After change of ends, Vasco regrouped and stormed the rival half with barrage of raids and had two early chances to equalise, but keeper Edward Ansah rose to the occasion to deny Satish Minz and Weis from scoring. Vasco kept on the pressure and were distinctly unlucky midway into the second half when Weis' header twice hit the upright and was cleared by rival defenders. Vasco did not lose hope as they pressed hard in search of the equaliser and finally succeeded in injury time. Marcos, who worked hard in the middle to keep the attack moving, laid a pass to Weis, who unleashed a fierce left-footer between two rival defenders into the net. (PTI)
