Mahindra United draw with East Bengal

Local outfit Mahindra United held defending champions East Bengal to a 1-1 draw, after dominating for most part of the match, in the National Football League at the Cooperage today. Mahindra United went into the lead in the 14th minute when their mid-fielder Isa Musa Eroja scored off winger S Venkatesh pass when M Venkatesh failed to stop a rebound off East Bengal custodian Sangram Mukherjee. Mahindra's Nigerian recruit Bala Usman had tried to score earlier. As long as Musa was on the ground, the East Bengal forwards failed to penetrate Mahindra defence, but once Musa was injured seriously after colliding with his own custodian Virender Singh and East Bengal's mid-fielder Isiaka Aowemy and had to be replaced with Jeevan Moras in the 70th minute their defence slackened. The defending champions scored the equalizer in the 81st minute through their winger Omolaja Olalekan off substitute Bijen Singh, whose introduction in the 80th minute in place of striker Dipendu Biswas added more pep to their attack. Vasco record their first win A late goal by striker Rui Wanderley Reis helped Vasco down a fighting Punjab Police 2-1 to gain their first full points in the sixth edition of the National Football League. Satish Minz' curling left-footer gave Vasco the lead in the 15th minute. Punjab, who came with swift counter moves, restored parity through striker Parveen Kumar four minutes before the interval to have both the teams leading 1-1 at half time. Vasco, who controlled the second half, pressed hard in the last 15 minutes and found the winning goal through Wanderley Reis in the 84th minute. Vasco now have four points from this win and a draw in three matches, while Punjab Police who suffered their third defeat are still to open their account from as many matches. (PTI)
