Newcastle United pulled off a shock 3-1 win at Arsenal on Tuesday to go on top of the English Premiership table. It was the Magpies' first victory in London in 30 games stretching back over four years. Robert Pires gave Arsenal an early lead, but after both sides were reduced to 10 men, second-half goals from Andrew O'Brien, an Alan Shearer penalty, and Lauren Robert meant Newcastle leapfrog Liverpool to go top of the table. Newcastle had not won a game in Higbury in four years and was under pressure early on. Kanu had a free header after just five minutes but failed to capitalize on it. The Nigerian striker should have made up for that with another chance 10 minutes later. However, it took all of Thierry Henry's skills to give Arsenal the lead. The French striker came up with a brilliant cross that finally ended up with Robert Pires, who tapped the ball home, Arsenal up 1-0 after 20 minutes. But the gunners were in trouble in the 42nd minute when Ray Parlour was sent off for his second yellow card and Arsenal were down to 10 men. And it didn't take Newcastle long to equalize. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Andrew O'Brien headed in off a corner. Newcastle and Arsenal were level on goals and by the 72nd minute. They were level on the number of players as well, as Craig Bellamy was shown the red card. Substitute Laurent Robert gave his side the advantage after he was fouled in the area by Sol Campbell. The referee pointed to the spot and Alan Shearer fired home the penalty for his first ever goal at Higbury. Arsenal was looking for the equalizer but it was Newcastle who scored again, Robert with his second goal of the game. Newcastle went on to win 3-1.
