Brazil are in real danger of not going to the World Cup finals for the first time in their history after another shattering defeat in their South American qualifying group. This time it was Bolivia who humbled the four-times world champions, by three goals to one in La Paz on Wednesday. After going ahead through Edilson before the half hour, a goal from Lider Paz and two second half strikes from Julio Cesar Baldivieso condemned Brazil to their sixth defeat in qualification and means they must win their last match against Venezuela in a week's time to be sure of a ticket to Japan and South Korea next year. Brazil knew they had to win against Bolivia to qualify and looked like going in the right direction when Edilson scored after 26 minutes with a blistering shot from just outside the penalty area. But just before half time and a bad piece of defending by Brazil saw Bolivia's Lider Paz steal the ball and hammer it pass the Brazilian keeper for the equaliser. But there was more to come for Brazil in the second half. The four time champions found themselves behind in the 70th minute after a free kick from 40 meters out gave Bolivia a 2-1 lead. And Brazil slipped up again two minutes from time, when Jose Alfredo Castillo fouled in the area by Cafu. Baldivieso converted from the spot for a 3-1 win, as Brazil suffered their sixth defeat in this qualification campaign, by far the worst in their history. They must now beat Venezuela next week in order to qualify for next year's finals. Anything less, and Uruguay could steal the last qualification spot and Brazil would have to play off against Australia.
