Fancied Karnataka and Services got off to a good start notching easy wins over their respective rivals in the inaugural league matches of the 57th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy here today. In a cluster-6 match, Karnataka drubbed Jammu and Kashmir 7-1 after leading 5-0 at half-time. In another one-sided match Services crushed Rajasthan 11-1 in Cluster-1 after leading 7-0 at the interval. In a cluster-4 match, Madhya Pradesh defeated Pondicherry 4-1 after leading by a solitary goal at lemon break. Karnataka, who seemed too good for J and K, opened the account when mid-fielder Xavier Vijay Kumar shot home in the 6th minute following a lost pass from the left flank. Winger Sheikh Sanjeeb made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute when he smartly booted home a beautiful pass from right-winger Dayanand. Dayanand again got the third goal four minutes later following a free kick while, Vijay Kumar scored his second goal in the 43rd minute off mid-fielder Rajendra Prasad's pass. A minute before the half time, Rajendra Prasad scored converting a neat back pass from winger S Sunil who did the spadework outsmarting a host of J and K defenders. Soon after the interval J and K was awarded a penalty after their winger Rasheed Sofi was brought down by Karnataka defender Dhanesh. Striker Deepak Sagral, who took the spot kick, made no mistake. Karnataka substitute Gopi and S Sunil scored the 6th and 7th goals for their team in the 80th and 85th minutes respectively. (PTI)
