The biggest action in the English Premier League this weekend was probably the news of Liverpool's manager Gerard Houiller undergoing an 11-hour heart operation. And an under strength Manchester United team got some help from Sunderland in their 3-1 win. A second string team of United taking on Sunderland. But they would still take the lead after 34 minutes. But it was an own goal by Sunderland's defender Stanislav Varga. The second goal came more legitimately in the 60th minute after a nice through pass by Andy Cole found Ryan Giggs, who had little trouble chipping the ball over the keeper. And Manchester sealed the game after Cole scored his fifth goal of the season, as United went up 3-0. Sunderland would pull one back for a final 3-1 score line. Manchester's archrivals Arsenal also seemed to be in fine touch. They opened the scoring after just five minutes against Southampton. Robert Pires slotting the ball home from the top of the penalty area. Arsenal scored the winner in the 74th minute through Thierry Henry. That was the Frenchman's 9th goal of the season. He is now just four behind the top scorer so far which is Michael Owen. Owen though can't increase his tally just yet. The forward watching his team from the stands as they took on Leeds. And he wouldn't have been very pleased to see Leeds take the lead after 26 minutes. Gary McAllister's poor header set up Harry Kewell for the goal. Grim viewing for Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier who had to be taken to hospital at half-time suffering from chest pains. England and Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler's shot found the post but didn't miss Danny Murphy, who headed home the equaliser, Liverpool holding on for the one all draw. But there was bad news later as Houllier had to undergo an 11 hour heart surgery. He is said to be recovering well and Liverpool will have a big test playing their Champions League game on Tuesday without him. For Leeds though, the draw still means they are at the top of the Premier League ahead of Arsenal and defending Champions Manchester United who are third on goal difference. Aston Villa and Newcastle United wrap up the top five.Topics mentioned in this article
